MercyMe
A period of brokenness led to the formation of the worship band, MercyMe in 1994. The band from Greenville, Texas has quickly evolved from being Christian music's fastest-selling new act to one of the most successful bands in all musical genres with the release of their album Almost There, which featured the popular song, I Can Only Imagine. The smash hit earned them several Dove Awards including the prestigious Song of the Year. It was also played on pop, country and adult contemporary radio stations nationwide.
Since they rocked the charts in 2001, MercyMe has grown beyond its label as "a Christian band" and become nationally known as a great rock group that tackles such serious themes as God and love. Their music is appealing to both devout Christians who study the Bible and young teens who devour Rolling Stone. It’s that genuineness and the band’s obvious affection for each other that audiences respond to.
The bands other albums include Spoken For, Undone, The Christmas Sessions, and most recently, Coming up to Breathe.
The band has won numerous Dove awards over the years and in 2003 they received an American Music Award nomination for Favorite Contemporary Inspirational Artist.
MercyMe “Unplugged”
Our team spent some time on the road with MercyMe and asked them some questions about being successful and following Christ. You can hear more from MercyMe by watching one of the Bluefish TV video resources to the right.
Bluefish TV: What is some of the best advice you’ve ever received about following Christ?
MercyMe: I was always involved in the church and I was that guy that tried to be the “super” Christian and whenever there would be a big decision to make I would just say, “I’m just trying to find the will of God.” A college minister of mine told me to live my life for Christ and God’s will will show up. If you stay obedient and stay in the word of God and develop your love and growth with Christ, the will of God is going to become obvious...if you are obedient in the word and you start to learn and know more about God as you go, it should become easier and easier to find out what he wants from you.
Bluefish TV: Staying in a band is tough. How would you describe how God has provided for you guys?
MercyMe: I’ve never been concerned about finances. I’ve been concerned about paying bills and I was more carefree than most…I just thought it would be provided. It’s a little scary at times, but it’s the calling that God has laid on my life and I am so passionate about it. When we were making ten bucks a show it didn’t concern us because we knew that we had been called to serve the almighty God...there were times I would get stressed out, but the only thing I had to embrace and rely on was that I was in God’s will.
Bluefish TV: What is a recent struggle your band has encountered?
MercyMe: With all the success, students will kind of put you on a pedestal or platform and they want to look at you like a rock star…and it’s difficult at times because we want them to see through us completely…sometimes it is hard to make sure that true worship is taking place. I definitely wouldn’t say that all the success has been really horrible, but there have been some struggles and that’s what we’ve been going through lately.
