GRITS

gritsNashville-based Christian rap group GRITS, which stands for Grammatical Revolution in the Spirit, consists of Teron "Bonafide" Carter and Stacy "Coffee" Jones who came together to form the group in 1993.

GRITS is a life-affirming alternative in Christian music. The theme in their music is the honest exploration of our personal nature and need for faith in God. GRITS scored a major national breakthrough with the remarkable Grammatical Revolution, released in 1999. Among other accolades, the album earned the group a Billboard Video Award and an appearance on the nationally syndicated radio show Sway & Tech.

In 2002, the group released their album, Art of Translation, which solidified the group's assent as one of hip-hop's hottest new rising stars. The song, Here We Go, was used in the Jack Nicholson film Something's Gotta Give. The disc also added spins to GRITS' radio-video track record, which includes cracking MTV2's Top 10 Most Requested and Top 5 Handpicked and climbing countless hip-hop charts. Their music has also been featured in such TV shows as America’s Next Top Model, Boston Public, Resurrection Boulevard, The Real World, and MTV Cribs. At the 2005 Dove Awards, GRITS won Rap/Hip-Hop Song of the Year for their song, Hittin’ Curves.

As support continues swelling from all mediums and outlets, GRITS prove that they are rappers with genuine style and spiritually uplifting joints. Their other albums include Factors of the Seven, The Art of Transformation, Dichotomy A, and Dichotomy B and 7.

GRITS “Unplugged”

While working on a ministry project with GRITS, we asked them some questions about their music and their future as musicians. You can see more of GRITS in one of the Bluefish TV video resources on the right.

Bluefish TV: As a band, how do you reach your audience?

GRITS: We’ve never had any doubts as far as where we’re headed, where we want to be—it’s always been to be that alternative and to be the light in the midst of the darkness…they’ll never get it if you don’t go to them. We just look at the example that Christ set and how He went out to the people to help them.

Bluefish TV: What do you hope to communicate to young people through your lyrics?

GRITS: We want to be that entity that can come in and connect…and say, “look man, we come from some of the same things you come from.” But at the same time we know that there is a truth out there that’s real and we’ve taken it as our own, and that truth is Christ and we’re not ashamed of that.

Bluefish TV: As you look to the future, what do you hope to accomplish?

GRITS: We want to go the next level of the music industry—be executives. We have some artists that we’re working with and working on putting on our own independent label, 5th Element Entertainment. We just want to continue giving people what they’ve been getting from GRITS, but from a different angle and with different artists…really expand the horizon, really build a legacy.
