Shane & Shane
While in college at Texas A&M, Shane Barnard and Shane Everett formed the acoustic/pop worship duo Shane & Shane. Both men were actively pursuing other careers when they began playing together. Known for their dueling acoustic guitars and searing harmonies, Shane & Shane has sold over 350,000 albums and they have successfully put a new face on worship.
In the duo’s album, Clean, which came out in 2004, they kicked their impassioned blend of acoustic rock and pop-laced-worship up a level. This album, featuring themes of grace and justification, appeals to their college and young professional fan-base as well as reaching further into the “soccer mom” audience that Christian radio targets.
Keeping worship music fresh isn't an easy feat these days, but Shane & Shane avoid following trends or repeating what's already been done. As they lead worship, they focus the spotlight squarely on God, and says Everett, “No matter how we feel, the truths are absolute. We're called to do this. We're called to proclaim the greatness of God."
Shane and Shane also lead worship at conferences and events around the nation. These events include Fusion and Leadnow conferences, which are created by Rightnow, a division of Bluefish TV.
Their other albums include Psalms, Carry Away, and Upstairs.
Shane & Shane “Unplugged”
Our team spent some time with Shane & Shane working on a ministry project. During the project, we spent some time talking to them about how they got started, their view of worship and facing difficulty. You can see more of Shane & Shane in one of the Bluefish TV video resources on the right.
Bluefish TV: How did you get your start in music?
Shane & Shane: I started to play music when I became a believer…I started to play four chords and A-minor in a basement for years…all the way through my junior year at Texas A&M…I had never written a song, I had never stepped on a stage, so I didn’t know that music was something that I was gifted with. In a month my life went from me having no idea what I was going to do and heading more towards business, to being a full-time musician.
Bluefish TV: What is your view of worship?
Shane & Shane: I try to stay away from the cliché that worship is a lifestyle—but that’s a pretty good cliché…knowing God and enjoying God in your life on a daily basis…from parenting to singing…all in order to love our God who’s gracious enough to let us breathe again.
Bluefish TV: When you are facing difficult times in life, what is it that keeps you going?
Shane & Shane: I have had a lot of valleys and deserts over the last 5 or 6 years…the one little section of scripture that has gotten me through is Hosea 2…God is saying, “I’m leading my people over the desert and I will speak tenderly to her …” this is a picture of God literally leading us into dry places and into the valley to speak tenderly to us. At the end of the day we won’t come to Him as an obligated servant…we’re in love with Him…Knowing that God’s the wind behind those times in my life is awesome. Those times of disappointment and those times of dryness…those times where I’m scared…just knowing that God hasn’t left and that He’s wooing me into his presence and His arms helps me get through it.
